Botvin's LifeSkills is one of the best evidenced substance misuse prevention programmes in the world. It has been shown to be consistently effective, and is rated at the highest level of effectiveness by Blueprints and the Early Intervention Foundation. It can be delivered to young people aged 8 to 14 in schools and has been consistently shown to reduce drug use, alcohol use, physical and verbal aggression, antisocial behaviour and tobacco use.
Outcome Imps has been working with Barnardo's to support the UK adaptation of LifeSkills in Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England. This has included adapting the manual of the programme for the Basic and Advanced Levels, as well as supporting implementation planning and undertaking a process and outcomes evaluation.
The Growing Child programme has been shown in a randomised control trial to be effective at improving parent outcomes and promising in improving children's outcomes. It was developed in Ireland by the Lifestart Foundation. This programme is delivered by trained staff to parents in their own homes, from birth until the child reaches 5 years of age. This pilot in the WHSCT involves mainstreaming the programme for delivery by family support workers in family intervention services.
Outcome Imps is providing implementation support to the project. We are assessing and providing feedback on key drivers in real time, so service delivery can be improved as the programme rolls out. We have developed implementation plans, and met with different professional groups to discuss how the programme can be effectively delivered within family intervention teams.
